US Vice-President slammed for 'creepy' kiss

Social media has lit up after video emerged of US Vice-President Joe Biden attempting to kiss the cheek of the daughter of a US senator – a peck described as "creepy" and "the most awkward kiss ever".

The cringeworthy encounter took place in the Capitol Building in Washington on Tuesday, at a ceremony to swear in senators that have either been re-elected or newly elected.

During the traditional post-ceremony photo Biden stood alongside Senator Chris Coons, from Biden's home state of Delaware, and his family, and then lent down to speak to Coons' young daughter Maggie.

After Biden whispered in her ear for a few seconds, she can be seen turning away while the Vice-President attempts to kiss her cheek, only to fail to make contact.

The snub has caused Biden to be derided on social media.

"Note to Senator Coons: Don't invite Joe Biden to stay for the weekend," tweeted user Daniel Snyder.

"Oh my God, that footage of Biden kissing Senator Coons' daughter...she is SO uncomfortable," posted Kinsey Holley.

It was also not the only uncomfortable situation experienced by the gaffe prone Biden on the day.

The Vice-President's other exploits reportedly included calling Senator Joni Ernst "Gail", her husband’s name, telling Senator Pat Roberts’ daughter, "Thank God you look like your mother,” and declaring, "I like kids better than people".
