Twelve people arrested in counter-terrorism raids across Belgium

Twelve people have been arrested in dozens of co-ordinated counter-terrorism raids carried out across Belgium, relating to a case prosecutors say needed "immediate intervention".

The raids took place in 16 communes in the regions of Brussels, Flanders and Wallonia, and "passed off without incident," federal prosecutors said in a statement.

"Forty persons were taken in for questioning," the statement read.

"Twelve among them were arrested. The investigating judge will decide on their possible detention later today.

"152 garage lockups were searched as well.

"Currently no further information can be given concerning the seized items or the identities of the arrested persons."
