The man accused of beheading a UK grandmother with a machete in the garden of her north London home has refused to appear via video link in court.

Nicholas Salvadore, 25, is alleged to have killed Palmira Silva, 82, at her Edmonton home last week.

He declined to appear at a first Crown Court hearing via video link from Belmarsh prison in south east London, the London Evening Standard reported.

Bernard Richmond QC, for the defence, told the court that Mr Salvadore wanted to be present in court.

He was charged with murder and assaulting a police officer.

An application for bail has not been made.

An array of floral tributes were left outside the Silva family’s restaurant, Silva's Cafe, in Church Street after the attack.
