Emergency call released from survivor of axe attack on Perth family

Audio has emerged of the call made to emergency services by the surviving son from an axe attack in South Africa which claimed the lives of a Perth family.

The van Breda family was attacked late last month in their home at an exclusive golf resort in Stellenbosch, about 50km east of Cape Town.

Marli van Breda, 16, suffered serious head and throat wounds suffered during the attack that claimed the lives of her father Martin, 55, mother Theresa, 54, and her brother Rudi, 22.

Also at the home during the attack was youngest son Henri, who survived with minor bruising to his arms.

It is understood he made the call to emergency services.

Operator: "What kind of injuries is there?"

Caller: "Um...My family and me were attacked by an...an axe".

Operator: "Unconscious, uh?"

Caller: "Yes, and bleeding from the head."

The caller appeared calm, speaking slowly and clearly during the five-minute call.

Police have remained close-lipped during the investigation, but estate management said there was no sign of a forced entry.

"We've gone around the perimeter fence, we've looked at the footage, we've looked at the exits and entrances and we don't believe this is a outside incident," De Zalze Winelands Golf Estate spokesman Eben Potgieter said.
