More flight cancellations as hundreds of Aussies stranded in Bali

Hundreds of Australian tourists stranded in Bali due to a volcanic ash cloud face more waiting with only a handful of flights set depart to this morning.

A number of fights from Bali to Australia were cancelled on Sunday as the ash cloud neared the airport, with only a lucky few able to board a plane home.

Two Jetstar flights bound for Bali to pick up travellers yeterday were forced to turn around as conditions worsened.

And the conditions are expected to remain unfavourable with Virgin Australia cancelling flights planned for Monday morning, and Jetstar saying it plans limited flights.

"Mount Rinjani continues to erupt and the ash cloud is not showing signs of retracting away from Denpasar Airport at present," Virgin Australia said in a statement.

Jetstar says that following the latest forecast from the Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre it continues to assess the situation and at this stage plans limited daytime flying.

"We are planning to operate flights that depart Bali during daylight hours, subject to ongoing assessment of flying conditions in the morning," it said late on Sunday.

"As a result, we have had to change the timing of, or cancel, a number of scheduled Monday flights."

Both airlines are expected to provide another update on later this morning.
