Australian Scott Rush changes Bali jails

Convicted drug courier Scott Rush has transferred to an Indonesian jail away from the other Australian members of the so-called Bali Nine.

Rush, 28, one of the youngest of the nine Australians charged over the 2005 drug smuggling plot, was serving his life sentence in Bali's Kerobokan Prison.

The prison's governor Farid Junaidi on Tuesday told reporters he was moved to Bali's Karangasem jail at 4pm local time at the Brisbane man's own request.

Rush has a local "foster family" living close to the other jail, he said.

"His family in Australia has trusted these Balinese people to take care of him while he's there," the prison governor said.

"Scott has been requesting this for a long time."

Rush had been sentenced to death, but this was commuted to life in 2011 on judicial review.

The other Australians serving life sentences in Kerobokan prison are Martin Stephens, Matthew Norman, Si Yi Chen, Tan Duc Than Nguyen and Michael Czugaj.

Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran are in Kerobokan, sentenced to death for their roles.

Renae Lawrence was moved from Kerobokan to a jail in Jembrana, West Bali, in October, after allegedly plotting to kill two female prison guards.

She is serving 20 years but has had some small reductions in her sentence for good behaviour.

Rush was only 19 and on his first overseas trip when he was arrested at Ngurah Rai Airport in Bali with 1.3kg of heroin strapped to his legs and his body and underneath his clothing.
