APEC strong against terror: Turnbull

Malcolm Turnbull says he expects APEC countries will show as strong a commitment to defeating Islamic State and bringing about a political solution in Syria as G20 members did.

The prime minister has swapped one summit for another as he enters two days of APEC talks in Manila, just days after the G20 wrapped up in Antalya, Turkey.

Mr Turnbull, who met with US President Barack Obama in the Philippines capital on Tuesday, says it's important leaders of large Muslim nations show strong leadership in condemning extremism.

He has praised the efforts of Indonesian President Joko Widodo and Malaysia's Prime Minister Najib Razak, two fellow APEC member leaders.

While the US has not asked Australia to increase its military presence in the conflict zone, Mr Turnbull and Mr Obama discussed the need to ramp up pressure against IS, as well as ensure Muslims felt fully part of their communities.

Mr Turnbull said the US and Australia had a common purpose and strategy in fighting violent extremism.

A separate process is under way to come up with a road map for peace in Syria involving a UN Security Council resolution, ceasefire and the possible involvement of peacekeepers.

Russia is poised to step up its air offensive in Syria in the wake of what president Vladimir Putin, who met with Mr Abbott on Monday, says was a bomb attack on the passenger jet over Egypt last month, killing all 224 people on board.

"We will search for them anywhere they might hide. We will find them in any part of the world and punish them," Mr Putin said.

French fighter jets are also continuing a fresh round of air strikes in the wake of the Paris attacks.
