Australian anti-Islamic State fighter ‘charged as terrorist’ and detained in Germany

A Queensland man has been detained in Germany after allegedly fighting against ISIL forces in Syria.

Ashley Dyball says he is at risk of being charged with terrorism and being deported to Australia after fighting alongside a Kurdish militia group.

The 23-year-old was apparently travelling through Europe during a break from the conflict zone when he was detained.

He had been aligned with a militia group known as YPG, which has links to the terrorist organisation the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK).

In a social media post on Friday, he said he expected to be deported soon.  

Mr Dyball said he was sent to Eisenhuttenstadt Detention Centre and was “awaiting deportation from Germany to Australia in two days”.

“If anyone has a good German lawyer help a brother out, been charged as a terrorist,” he wrote.

Australian authorities confirmed an Australian man was being provided with consular assistance in Germany.

An official said they could not confirm the person’s identity due to privacy constraints.
