Judge who taught high schoolers about alcohol and the law arrested for DUI, hit-and-run

A US judge who held real-life trials in high schools to warn teens about the consequences of alcohol-related offences has been arrested for DUI and hit-and-run.

Perry Country Judge Dean Wilson was arrested last weekend after he crashed his 2014 Mercedes into a public bus before fleeing the scene, the Columbas Dispatch reports.

Police apprehended Wilson 20km away on the I-70 interstate highway.

The judge then refused a breathalyser and a field sobriety test before he was charged with operating a vehicle while impaired as well as a hit-and-skip on a public street.

The 60-year-old from Ohio was released on bond and the charges only carry misdemeanours.

Since 2003 the judge has run an in-school program where he holds real trials in front of students to teach them about the judicial system.

All but one of the trials covered alcohol-related offences.
