Alleged Canadian 'Rambo' killer arrested

A gunman suspected of killing three Canadian police officers and wounding two others has been arrested.

Justin Bourque was arrested in the eastern province of New Brunswick at around 12.30am local time today, according to Canadian Royal Mounted Police.

Twitter user Michelle Thibodeau posted a first-hand account of the arrest, saying: "He was in my backyard. I saw him arrested in front of my eyes. He is alive. Thank you #RCMPNB."

Ms Thibodeau later recounted the moment armed officers stormed into her backyard to CTV News.

"They were screaming, 'Come out with your hands up!'" she said.

"Without anything else, he just came out and said, 'I'm done.' And he had his arms raised."

Bourque, 24, was wanted after the shooting on Wednesday evening in the northwest area of the city.

Police including tactical officers began their search for the shooter on Wednesday night after responding to a call about a man walking along a road with a gun.

On what appears to be his Facebook page, the suspect posted extracts from a song by American heavy metal band Megadeth just before the shooting.

He took letters from the refrain of the song and spelled out the letters of the word freedom and ultimately wrote, "this spells out FREEDOM, it means nothing to me."

The exact circumstances of the shooting were not clear.

Local media said the shooter opened fire in cold blood in a residential area of the city.
