This start-up product lets you turn food scraps into cooking gas

You can now take your environmentally-friendly composting a step further thanks to an ingenious new system called HomeBiogas. The Israeli-based company has developed an affordable biogas system with the aim to stop households wasting their waste.

The relatively affordable, family-sized system converts organic waste scraps into clean cooking gas and a high quality liquid fertilizer for the garden, essentially allowing people to convert their own waste into affordable fuel.

As the video above shows the HomeBiogas system creates clean gas via the use of a special patented gas pressure mechanism and filter which works in conjunction with a chlorinator to transform up to 5 litres of food waste per day, to output create around three hours of clean biogas (made up of around 65 percent methane and 35 percent carbon dioxide).  

The self-sustained sustainability product looks a little like a mini greenhouse, but is small enough to be at home in the most urban of environments, which makes it easy for city-dwellers to go green.

Currently in the crowd-funding stages of an Indiegogo campaign a HomeBiogas system will set you back $1337.20 (US$995).
