Deb Saunders: Pottery and ceramics are having a serious moment right now

Ceramics and pottery are making quite a splash in the world of interiors right now, appearing in shops, social media, magazines and homes everywhere.

As is often the case when something makes a resurgence, it's with an exciting new twist.

Ceramicists and potters have upped the ante and the results are stunning.

You can add interest and warmth to your space with a perfectly placed piece. Infuse your own style using pottery in shelving for a beautiful vignette, on your kitchen table or bench, or in any room these earthy pieces add interest. I love using a unique bowl as a soap dish in the bathroom or kitchen.

You can also unearth some gems in second hand stores so get fossicking. But if that's not going to work for you right now, I follow many potters and ceramicists on socials and absolutely love what they create.

Here are some of my favourites:

All Fired Up

Sandra at All Fired Up has the most amazing eye. Her pieces are earthy, raw and unique. I own a few of Sandra's pieces too.

Her work has been featured in many magazines and it's no surprise, these are definitely conversation starters that make a statement.

Watch out for a collaboration soon between Sandra and I — so fun.

Tortus

Eric is a throwing instructor and founder of the Tortus studio in Denmark.

He has toured Australia and has taught some very lucky people his methods in workshops.

Robert Gordon Pottery

A best seller in my store The Shed Luxe is Robert Gordon, one of Australia's last large scale potteries.

Robert Gordon has been manufacturing high fired stoneware for over 25 years.

I own lots of Robert Gordon and absolutely love that it is so beautiful but also durable. My pantry is decorated with it and my coffee cups are Robert Gordon — they get a serious workout but always look so good. It is beautiful, functional and affordable.

Rachel Saunders Ceramics

I love Rachel Saunders Ceramics. (She is no relation to us — I wish!) Just the introduction alone on her website is a delight.

"Handmade ceramics & intentional objects to aid in the joy of living. Pieces to both inspire and further our connection with self, our environment, and with each other," reads the site.

Her pieces are as beautiful as her ethos is.

Nicolette Johnson

Nicolette's pieces are hard to get a hold of. She's Brisbane-based and has work included in the permanent collections of The National Gallery of Victoria and The Museum of Brisbane.

Her coiling and sculpting techniques make her work incredibly striking, and it sells out fast.

Handle it

When it comes to choosing pieces that work for your home, of course you want to pick something you like and that works with your style.

But, it's all about the handle! Handles are making a statement. Eye catching, ergonomic, just one pretty little piece with a statement handle can make your whole room pop.
