Highlights:
The town of Kanchanaburi is 120 kms from Bangkok, close to the Myanmar border. It's home to the famous Bridge on the River Kwai, a steel railway bridge built by prisoners of war during World War 2. The nearby war cemeteries are a sombre reminder of the atrocities that occurred there.
The region also has spectacular national parks, lakes, jungles and of course rivers to explore. Sam headed up into the mountains for a unique experience on the Little River Khwae Noi, a tributary of the River Khwae (Kwai). Bamboo rafting has been used for centuries as the best way to travel past districts to the main towns; these days locals use faster motor boats. For Sam, meandering downstream on a simple raft of bamboo poles tied together was a lovely way to enjoy the natural beauty of Erawan National Park on the way back to Kanchanaburi town.
The region is also home to some fantastic resorts and hotels. Sam's pick was Cross River Kwai, located right on the river with amazing views out to the mountain ranges. Not exactly what you would expect to find hidden in the countryside, but the modern design blends seamlessly with the surroundings. The resort has a variety of accommodation options including poolside cabins, and floating cabins complete with rooftop deck and private dock with a two-seater kayak. For the ultimate in luxury you can't beat the falling water pool villas. Available in one or two bedrooms, with a private indoor/outdoor pool and waterfall, they are an eccentric mix of design and serenity. There is even the option of having a floating breakfast in your pool, overlooking the river.
Kanchanaburi province has something for everyone – historical sites, natural wonders, culture, tasty local food and great resorts. All only a couple of hours from the craziness of Bangkok.
