Highlights:
Catriona’s meander along the Danube River from her starting point at Budapest was nothing short of glorious! Winding through Bratislava and Vienna, passing tiny hamlets and hilltop monasteries, the cruise continued on into German Bavaria.
Leisurely mornings sailing on Scenic Amber were one of Catriona’s favourite parts of the day. The top deck walking track was great for getting in some exercise, you can have the heated pool all to yourself, or relax in the peace and quiet of the main lounge with a good book. Catriona thought watching the passing scenery from her own private balcony was pretty wonderful too!
Catriona had the afternoon free to explore one of the Danube’ most vibey old cities, Regensburg. Walking through the 2,000-year-old town there was a wonderful mix of ancient sights and youthful energy. She joined her guide at Bischofshof beer garden for a traditional lunch of white asparagus and boiled potatoes in what used to be the Bishop’s residence. Later, strolling past the gothic spires of St Peters cathedral and down the road the famous 12th century Stone Bridge, they came across the oldest sausage kitchen in the world! Catriona couldn’t pass up the opportunity to get hands on and make her own Weisswurst! Mixing minced veal, lemon zest, parsley, cardamom, pepper, ginger and mace into casings, the completed links were simmered in a big pot. Only the fluffy, tasty insides were eaten, served with mustard, pretzels, beer and a song!
The day culminated in a five-course Italian culinary experience at Scenic Amber’s fine dining restaurant, Portobello. The degustation menu used sumptuous fresh local ingredients and featured
