If you’re looking for the literal definition of paradise, look no further than French Polynesia.
With its pristine white sandy beaches, mesmerising turquoise waters, and the iconic overwater bungalows that Bora Bora perfected, it feels like a page torn from a travel magazine.
Catriona Rowntree recently ventured to this tropical haven to experience the Four Seasons Bora Bora, a resort that elevates luxury to an entirely new level. From the moment she arrived, ushered in by a traditional shell horn blast, it was clear this wasn’t just a holiday; it was a masterclass in French-Polynesian hospitality.
Catriona Rowntree discovers one of the world’s best kept secrets. Getaway
Framed by the dramatic, jagged volcanic peak of Mount Otemanu and cradled by a crystal-clear lagoon, the resort is designed to slow time down and dial the “wow” factor all the way up.
During her stay, Catriona explored the stunning accommodations, including an overwater bungalow with a private, heated plunge pool and endless lagoon views.
While the overwater retreats are world-famous, the sprawling beachfront villa estates offer a blend of spacious, private poolside entertaining areas and the ultimate “barefoot luxury” lifestyle.
Beyond the sheer comfort of the resort, the lagoon itself proved to be the star attraction. Like a living classroom, the area is a protected sanctuary for exotic fish and coral. Catriona joined a guided snorkelling tour led by a marine biologist, who explained that the vibrant reef is vital for the ocean’s health.
The experience highlighted the resort’s commitment to reef conservation, teaching visitors to love and protect these fragile ecosystems.
Moving from the water to the soul of the island through cultural immersion, Catriona participated in a Monoi oil workshop. Sharing the art of creating the sacred perfume from an all-natural blend of coconut oil and Tiare flowers helps to preserve local traditions.
As daylight faded, the resort came alive with drumming and a spectacular fire dance. Catriona capped off her time with a private beach dinner. Watching the sunset while wearing a handcrafted flower crown, she reflected on the unique charm of the Four Seasons, French chic combined with incredible service and warm hospitality.
With the scent of coconut and vanilla lingering on her skin, Catriona felt like she had been let in on one of the world’s best kept secrets, where unrivalled luxury meets French Polynesia’s cultural heart. The memories are a piece of paradise she will keep forever.
