Highlights:
The island of Corsica is defined by its diverse architecture and landscape. The dramatic cliff-top town of Bonifacio has postcard views of white cliffs and blue sea. Historically, this commanding view from the fortress earned it the title of the "most impregnable fortress of the Mediterranean". Once a poor fishing town, Bonifacio is now one of Europe's most exclusive addresses and one of the most expensive places in France.
Corsica's unique geography and multi-layered history has defined the earthy traditional cuisine. At Galerie des Ducs wine bar Shaynna enjoyed a delicious platter of local cured meats, cheese and sun loving fruits, merging the best of French and Italian gastronomy.
Back on board Emerald Sakara, the focus on great food continued in the main restaurant, La Cucina. Apart from the incredible meals, the setting is the star of the show, with warm sea breezes and a spectacular ever-changing view. With exceptional food, great company and amazing locations each day, Shaynna couldn't imagine a better way to travel!
Crossing the sea to the Italian coast, Shaynna spent the day in one of the most visited cities on the planet, Rome. Busy, modern life sits side by side with ancient monuments at every turn. Standing outside the Aurelian city walls, Shaynna was reminded of Rome's imperial past. Built in the 3rd Century the walls still circle the historical centre and boast 284 watch towers. Beyond the city centre lies the Appian Way, a road which began construction in 312 BC, and the reason behind the saying, "all roads lead to Rome". Today, it is a peaceful stretch enjoyed by cyclists and hikers but the well-worn lines of chariot wheels are still visible in the cobble stones.
Back on board the luxurious super yacht, there was time to relax after a big day of sightseeing in Rome. Guests enjoyed a soak in the hot tub or pool, and a cocktail at sunset while Emerald Sakara cruised onwards.
On Corsica's northeast coast, Bastia holds a distinct Italian flavor following five centuries of Genoese rule, during which time it served as the island's capital. Administration was conducted from the impressive citadel that is now the Museum of Art and History. From there it was a short stroll back down to the old port, once the lifeblood of the city, with its beautiful buildings and colourful laneways.
There is something special about mornings at sea, where your day begins with a sleep-in, your favourite cuppa on your private balcony, or maybe a spot of yoga on the sun deck. Emerald Sakara returned to the starting point of Nice on the French Riviera, and from there it was a half hour drive to Antibes, a fantastic city that blends old-world charm with super yacht glamour.
Though it began as a Greek trading post and later a military port, Antibes' marina became the largest in Europe after American billionaires discovered it post-World War II. Beyond the new world glamour, the streets of the old town is where Shaynna found the true nature of the city. At the open-air market she sampled local olives, tomatoes and herbal teas. Just steps away is the Picasso Museum, housed in the historic Chateau Grimaldi. While living there Pablo Picasso was inspired by the peaceful and magnificent view of the sea, and produced many paintings, ceramics, and sculptures.
Further along the coast in Cannes, where the Riviera meets the red carpet, home of the famous film festival, La Croisette promenade, and elegant historic hotels. Like Antibes, Cannes was once a humble fisherman's village before transforming into one of the most expensive cities in the world, with super yachts replacing fishing boats in the harbour.
In the hills behind Cannes, Shaynna swapped the coast for the country in Grasse, the perfume capital of the world, famous for cultivating the rose used in Chanel No.5. She toured through the iconic perfumery, Fragonard, operating since 1926, and as part of a hands-on workshop Shaynna got to create and bottle her own personalised scent.
The Western Mediterranean is a cruise destination that truly reminds you why you need to take a holiday, providing a perfect blend of ancient history and elevated experiences. The size of Emerald Sakara allows the ship to access ports where large ships cannot go, affording a more intimate experience. The greatest luxury of all is unpacking just once and waking up in a different, fantastic destination every day. From dining on delicious food onboard, to exploring unique landmarks, it is, quite simply, the kind of destination where you vow to come back, before you've even left.
