With only a couple of thousand locals, it is the second most visited island in the Cooks, loved for its laid-back charm and iconic blue lagoon. One stroll along the water and you’ll find yourself sinking into holiday mode before you’ve even unpacked.

Livinia loved the premium beachfront rooms, but the poolside options are equally comfortable and the two-bedroom suites are a great pick for families. For a refuel in between lagoon dips, Livinia headed a short drive inland from the resort to Avatea Café and bar, a family-owned small business and local favourite. Their specialty is fresh fish and the quality of their organic produce shines through in every delicious dish. Open for brunch, lunch and dinner they also serve coffee, smoothies, cocktails and craft beer made in house.
Livinia says to truly experience the best of the island, you have to get out on the lagoon. It’s famous for its myriad shades of blue, which glow due to a combination of unique micro-algae, shallow depths, and a white sandy bottom that reflects the sunshine. For those seeking adventure, Wet & Wild Aitutaki has everything from snorkelling and island hopping to fishing. For a bit of silly fun, Livinia tried tubing, which she described as a great way to turn up the excitement on a day that’s usually all about sun and relaxation.
