Ride sharing app Uber is launching more special zones at airports to make finding your car much easier after getting off a plane in Australia.

The airport pick up zones are now in place at airports including Sydney, Gold Coast, Hobart, Cairns and Darwin.

They aim to reduce waiting times for cars, and ease congestion for both locals and tourists using the airport.

Uber reckons the new system it has reduced traffic by 36 per cent at Sydney Airport since its launch earlier this year.

When 9Travel landed at Melbourne Airport recently, we found it easier to get an Uber thanks to an organised taxi-style queuing system.

Rather than a car being assigned to you via the app and having to find it, we put through a request, then stood in the Uber line and got in the next one which came up as it was our turn.

A pin code we had to share with the driver ensured we were in the correct car.

Meanwhile, Uber is also expanding regionally.

Holiday hotspots including the Whitsundays now have Uber services.

Another new service on the way is longer distance trips via a pre-bookable service for cars called Uber Intercity.

While we're not sure we'll be taking an Uber from Sydney to Melbourne, it could be a good option for some longer trips.

Uber is also expanding into car rental with Uber Rent, which will work with big car rental firms.
