The cities to avoid if you're trying to plan a budget holiday

When you're putting together a budget for your next holiday, it's easy to come up with the main things you know you'll be spending on.

Hotels, flights, and meals are all no-brainers. But often people forget to factor the price of transportation within a city into their holiday budget.

And in some cities, that could be hundreds of dollars.

Amsterdam has been named the most expensive city to get around, in a new study from Deluxe Holiday Homes.

A single public transport ticket in Amsterdam costs $6 (double what many cities charge), while taxis charge about $5 per kilometre.

Renting a car is also pricey - daily rates average $213, among the highest in the study.

The Dutch city is beloved for its canals, architecture, and coffee shops, but if you're planning a visit, it might be worth paying a little extra to stay in the heart of the city.

Alternatively, the nearby city of Utrecht offers the same charm at a fraction of the price.

Berlin, the capital city of Germany, came second on the list. A single bus or metro ticket costs $6.80 here, making daily commuting expensive. And it's a big city, so you'll want to be moving around.

Fuel is also pricey, at about $3 per litre on average.

Anyone who's visited London recently knows that it's a very expensive place to visit (and to live) - and transport is no exception. Public transport tickets go for $6.20 here, which is cheaper than Berlin but still among the highest in the world.

London cabs charge $5.16 per kilometre, and those who decide to save on taxi expenses by renting a car will still have to pay more than $150 for it each day.

Fourth place goes to Hong Kong, where public transport is reasonably priced, but the cost of fuel and car rentals are very high.

Unsurprisingly, another European city is next on the list: Milan ranks fifth among the world's most expensive cities for transportation.

"Transportation prices often get overlooked when friends or families budget for their vacation," says the spokesperson from Deluxe Holiday Homes.

"People focus on flights and hotels but forget that moving around the city takes a significant chunk of the budget."
