'Coolcations' are the next big holiday trend: here's where to experience them

Sun, swims and sipping cocktails on a tropical paradise beach - it's the scenario many of us usually have in our heads when we think of a dream holiday.

However, as travellers become increasingly adventurous and willing to explore far-flung destinations around the world, this could soon be a thing of the past.

In fact, experts say there's a new trend that's spiked in the travel industry - the rise of the 'coolcation'.

What is a coolcation?

According to Antonio Paradiso, MD UK, Ireland and Australia, and VP of International Sales at MSC Cruises, travellers are ditching their usual sun-drenched holidays for ones that focus on natural wonders and epic landscapes.

"Cooler destinations are rising in popularity as travellers seek out milder climates in place of traditional 'summer sun' hotspots," Antonio tells 9Travel.

"While there's still plenty of demand to travel to warm destinations and bask in the sunshine throughout Europe and the Caribbean, cooler destinations are becoming more popular," Antonio adds.

"More and more travellers choosing to forgo the sun and beach for cooler areas."

Another bonus to journeying to cooler climes? It's likely to be less busy, and offer a more relaxing and rewarding holiday experience.

Cruising coolcations

Alaska

One destination that's seen a surge of interest is Alaska, with cruises to this spectacular area becoming increasingly popular.

"MSC Cruises will set sail for the first time to Alaska, a destination known for its breathtaking scenery, rugged wilderness, and abundant wildlife," says Antonio.

With the company's MSC Poesia set to sail to Alaska for the first time in May 2026, travellers have more luxurious options than ever to explore the region.

"MSC Poesia is one of four ships in MSC Cruises' Musica Class, which offers almost exclusively balcony cabins to enjoy scenic journeys, generous indoor and outdoor spaces including distinctive lounges for guests to relax and socialise," adds Antonio.

Norway

If sailing through stunning fjords is more to your liking, a coolcation to Norway might be the way to go.

Departing from Norway's charming coastal town of Bergen before finishing in Reykjavík in Iceland, Viking Cruises' 13-day Iceland Majestic Escapes trip takes in stunning mountain ranges, Viking history and local wildlife along the way.

Book a trip in June (the beginning of summer in Norway), and you'll still experience mild temperatures of 10 degrees and upwards.

Chill out spots

Canada

For natural wonders like no other, Canada is an excellent coolcation choice.

With many national parks showcasing stunning ice fields and glaciers, try hiking in Banff National Park or spotting wildlife such as elk, deer, wolves and moose in Jasper National Park.

If you prefer a city escape, Ontario is making the coolcation a major focus of their tourism drive, with winter glamping in huts and dining al fresco in heated bubbles becoming more widespread.

"I think Ontario has a lot to offer when it comes to the coolcation," Tourism Minister Stan Cho told the Toronto Star.

"There are people around the world who never get to see snow, never get to see a ski slope, or have never skated in their lives, and these things are great experiences."

Scotland

Famous for its cooler climate and grey skies, what tourists once avoided is now the very thing drawing them to serene Scotland.

Perfect for those who want to escape the stress and chaos of crowded destinations, quaint coastal towns, historic castles and the distinctive charm of bigger cities such as Edinburgh and Glasgow mean there's something for everyone.

With average summer temperatures hovering at about 17 degrees during the day, this is one place that's guaranteed not to leave you hot and bothered.
