Stunning Vanuatu sight blew first-timer away: 'Feels surreal'

When you think of a visit to the South Pacific, you might imagine lounging along beaches, snorkelling through pristine waters, or taking a dip in a fancy hotel pool.

I'd never been on a tropical getaway, nor had I really considered adding it to my holiday bucket list, but I can confirm that a trip to Vanuatu definitely changed that. 

Taking in the lush landscapes, swimming through crystal clear waters, and relaxing to the most gorgeous sunsets makes Vanuatu a must-see destination for anyone looking for a tropical escape.

Discover the local 'kastoms'

Staying at Havannah Boat House offered intimate experiences to learn more about the local 'kastoms' and culture alongside the private, relaxing surrounds of the estate.

Havannah Boat House only books out their Boat House residence to one booking at a time so your time at the resort is very private.

While staying at the Boat House you can also learn more about the culture of the island from Ni-Vanuatu artisans, from workshops on pottery and basket weaving, to trying freshly made kava.

I tried my hand at basket weaving and pottery and they are not as easy as they may seem.

Unwind to the sunset on a yacht

No need to own your own boat, or even know how to sail, you can have your very own private yacht experience on Sailing Vanuatu's Major Tom (and their power boat, Ground Control).

The crew on the Major Tom let you take it at your own pace, with options to learn how to sail with the crew, relax in the hammocks, take in the views with a charcuterie board, or even snorkel in the reef. 

It's a choose-your-own-adventure experience where you're in control of the fun, adjusting it to be relaxing or adventurous at your leisure. 

The best part of sailing on the Major Tom has got to be the co-captain on board, Bowie the dog! This cute Labrador was the first crew-mate to greet us as we boarded and he definitely made sure our experience was as fun as possible.

Visit the Blue Lagoon

One trip to the Blue Lagoon will leave you wondering if you're dreaming. The turquoise waters of the lagoon are such an unbelievable shade of blue that it feels surreal. Swimming in it is even better.

There's no difficult hike to get to this watering hole. You can easily take a tour bus out to the spot and the location even has bathrooms and change rooms so you can get ready when you arrive. 

For those keen for a swim or having a go jumping in at one of the dive spots and rope swings, this is one of the best swim spots to go to.

Visit the first World Heritage Site in Vanuatu

If you're interested in history, or just curious about the local history, taking a tour of Chief Roi Mata's Domain is definitely a must-do. Chief Roi Mata's Domain was only registered as a World Heritage site in 2008. 

Historically Vanuatu has passed down its language and history through the oral tradition, making it extremely special to hear the stories of Vanuatu's unification from a local and seeing cave drawings up close.

Trust the Chef at Mangoes

Looking for a romantic dinner for two while on your tropical getaway? The 'Trust the Chef' dinner experience at Mangoes has you covered. 

This four-course degustation dinner will keep you guessing as you are given a menu with just a simple list of ingredients, leaving you wondering and constantly surprised at what each course actually is.

The experience is both delicious and very fun, trying to guess what type of dish each course is.

Adventure through the forest

If you love adventuring amongst nature, a trip to 'Eden on the River' is definitely something you need to add to your list.

Take a dip in the freshwater swim holes surrounded by lush tropical gardens or, if you're up for a little thrill seeking, try your hand tackling the treetop obstacle course and bridges. 

Shop Vanuatu Made

My favourite kind of souvenir on any holiday is something locally made, that's unique to the area, and something you really can't get anywhere else. The Vanuatu Made markets has this covered. 

Products repping the Vanuatu Made logo, very similar to our own "Australian Made" kangaroo logo, confirm those products are locally made from local businesses so you can be sure you're supporting the locals and getting something unique to the area. 

Definitely make sure to carry some local currency (Vatu) in your wallet, because these markets truly are something special.

While browsing the markets I came across a local who had two iguanas hanging out on his shoulders. He was so sweet, he offered to let me hold them. The locals are incredibly warm, kind, and extend a sweet hospitality that really makes you never want to leave.
