US Global Entry program is now open to eligible Australians - Here's what it means

Travelling to the United States will now be easier for some Australians thanks to a huge change that has finally been rolled out.
Australia has joined the US' Global Entry program, which means a more streamlined and expedited clearance through immigration and customs.
After initial trial phases for regular visitors were held, the program is now accepting applications for all eligible Australian citizens.
Here's everything you need to know.
What is the Global Entry program?
Global Entry is a US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) program that gives members (pre-approved, low-risk travellers) access to an expedited line upon arrival in the United States. Which basically means skipping the queue and avoiding lengthy waiting times.
Travellers must be pre-approved for the Global Entry program, with all applicants undergoing a rigorous background check and an in-person interview, in America, before enrolment.
You'll still need your passport and valid visa or ESTA.

How does the Global Entry program work?
At airports, program members have dedicated lines that take them to the Global Entry lanes. A photo is then taken to verify your identity and membership.
Once the photo has been captured, the member will receive on-screen instructions and proceed to a Customs and Border officer who will confirm the process.
Program members will also be able to access TSA pre-check at some airports.
That means you'll get through security faster.

How to apply
The Global Entry application process can take weeks, sometimes months, to complete in full. There is no minimum age requirement for Global Entry. However, if you are under the age of 18, you must have your parent or legal guardian's consent to participate in the program.
Australians must apply online and must then agree to a background check.
If approved you'll then be invited to an interview.
You'll then be told if you have been approved.
It lasts for five years.
An application for Global Entry is done through CBP's Trusted Traveler Programs (TTP) website. The non-refundable application fee for a five-year Global Entry membership is $US100.
However, phase two will not open until later in the year, with no date given.

Do Australian citizens need a visa for USA?
Australians travelling to the US still need to satisfy visa entry requirements even if they are a member of the Global Entry program.
As explained on Smarttraveller, entry requirements to the US are strict and authorities have broad powers to decide if you're eligible to enter.
Always check US entry, transit and exit requirements before you travel. If you're visiting for less than 90 days, Australians are eligible to apply for an Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) and enter the US under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP).
Otherwise, you'll need to get a visa before you travel. A visa is required if you are travelling for purposes other than business and short-term trips, or if your travel visit will last longer than 90 days. A visa is also required if you intend to travel to the United States on what is called a "non-signatory carrier".
How do I get an ESTA for the USA from Australia?
An ESTA is only available from the US Customs and Border Protection ESTA website. Be aware there are plenty of third-party sites that offer an ESTA, but you risk being scammed.
You'll be asked to answer basic eligibility questions and need to apply at least 72 hours before your trip. Real-time approvals are not available.
Applications are subject to a fee and ESTAs are valid for two years or the expiry date of your passport (if less than two years).
