Aussies are trading Bali for this island paradise in the Philippines
While Bali remains high on Aussies' holiday hotspots lists, another place is becoming a buzz place for cheap, tropical overseas getaways.
The Philippines has affordable luxury, sandy beaches and local food and culture to discover. Plus new direct flights are opening it up to more Aussies.
But there is one particular island spot that's leading the charge for travellers.

Hotel boss, Hans Martin Gfrei, General Manager at Shangri-La Boracay, which is on the popular island of the same name, reckons it's perfect for holidays as it blends "relaxation and energy".
"Travellers can enjoy quiet mornings by the sea, adventure-filled afternoons, and lively nightlife, all within a compact and easy-to-navigate island setting," he tells 9Travel.

And forget battling traffic like in Bali.
"The island is an intimate 7km which makes it very easy to get around and there's no heavy traffic, giving a more genuine tropical escape," he says.
While he might run one of the most upmarket resorts, you can also find great value hotels.
"Boracay caters to different travel styles and budgets, all within close reach of the beach," he says.

Boracay is an hour from Manila or 90 minutes from Cebu. From there it's ten to 15 minutes by boat from Caticlan.
As for where to stay, Hans recommends White Beach for first timers as everything is close enough to walk.
It's the nightlife hub, where watching the sunset is daily ritual.
His hotel has the award-winning Sirena Seafood Restaurant and Clifftop Bar for a romantic spot to see it.

Other resorts to choose include Station 1 for quieter beach mornings and wider shorelines.
Station 2 is a bustling and central area perfect for foodies and shoppers, he says.
Station 3 is "a little more laid-back and budget-friendly."
Island hopping is also possible, unlike in Bali where ferries can be treacherous, especially with "domestic connections from nearby hubs like Iloilo, Cebu, or Manila".

"Land transfers and ferry services are available to islands such as Palawan, Siargao, Cebu Province," he adds.
"Local tour operators and hotel concierge teams can tailor island-hopping itineraries based on interests whether it's surfing, diving, culture, or hidden coves."
Indeed, water sports and activities are one of the most popular things to do. Think paddleboarding, and kayaking in tropical waters, or even parasailing.
Kiteboarding is on offer at Bulabog Beach, while scooter tours are a good way to see the island. Or climb aboard a traditional Paraw boat for a unique sunset cruise.
Affordable Philippines
In the all-important affordability test, the Philippines come out on top, ins a survey done last year by Expedia.
Cebu City in the Philippines was one of two places (the other was Okinawa in Japan) which both had average daily accommodation rates under $120.
That means you can get a week's hotel in one of the two hotspots for under $1000.
But with over 7000 islands making up the Philippines, Aussies may be confused as to where exactly to go and how to get there.
It's possible for Aussies to fly direct to capital Manilla or island hub, Cebu. Then Boracay is another flight away.

As well as Boracay:
- Palawan has two UNESCO World Heritage sites and is popular with divers and snorkellers.
- Cebu offers a mix of vibrant culture and relaxing beaches, and is known for its historical sites.
- Siargao is a must-visit for surfers and they'll find world-class waves.
