This tiny city has been called the 'coolest' capital in the world - here's why
Wellington was once dubbed the "coolest little capital city in the world" by Lonely Planet, a fact which always seems to raise a few eyebrows.
It's a huge claim to make for a city with a population of 200,000, and the capital of a country with fewer residents than Sydney.
But all you need is one weekend there to see all the things to do in Wellington, and be convinced that it's well deserving of all the praise.

Where are the Lord of the Rings sights in Wellington?
The most accessible filming location is Mount Victoria, right on the edge of the central city.
Look for the walking track signposted as "Hobbit's Hideaway" where Frodo and the others hid under a gnarled tree root as a Black Rider passed close by. The original prop tree was removed, but the location is unmistakable.
