Ways to travel London that will make you fall in love with the city all over again

No matter what your interests, vibes or holiday style, there is always something to do in London. 

In the wintertime the city transforms into a festive winter wonderland but when the sun is out you can see the London's instantly-recognisable landmarks in a whole new light.  

Be it top tier eateries or iconic attractions there's something to tickle every traveller's fancy, it's what makes it one of my favourite cities in the world to visit.

Having travelled to the city twice before I thought I'd seen most of what London had to offer. But with the history-laden city constantly reinventing itself, when I toured the UK capital for a third time I fell in love with it all over again.

Whether you're a first-timer or a seasoned London traveller it can be daunting to know where to start, so we've found the best ways to travel the city and capture the most of its magic.

Move over Big Ben, there's a new London attraction – Lift 109. The newly opened attraction started welcoming visitors in November 2022. 

At first glance you'll think you're just visiting the old Battersea Power Station, but take a step inside and you'll discover a modern retail space boasting your favourite stores and Gordon Ramsay's Bread Street Kitchen & Bar.

On the second floor is the entrance to Lift 109, from there you'll ascend a thrilling 109 metres to the top of the north-west chimney. 

You're only in the lift for eight minutes, so make the most of your time and take in the epic 360 degree views of London's skyline.

Not only is Lift 109 a new addition to London, but the surrounding area of Battersea Power Station is an up and coming hotspot. With over 100 places to eat, drink and experience, Battersea Power Station is a corner of London I will definitely be going back to.

While new attractions like Lift 109 are a must, the London Eye is a popular British landmark that I'll simply never get tired of. It stands at 135 metres high making it one of the tallest ferris wheels in the world.  

Unlike other ferris wheels, its job is to deliver great views not a thrilling ride and the London Eye does exactly that, offering an unbeatable bird's eye perspective of London's South Bank.  

The dizzying height might make those faint of heart second guess it, but rest assured the glass pods circulate at a steady pace – it takes around 30 minutes to circle around fully.  

While you might walk past the London Eye dozens of times during your stay, getting inside a pod is an unmissable experience that lets you see the city through a whole new lens.

By sea  

More often than not, the River Thames will frame your view of London. But it's worth shaking things up and putting yourself smack bang in the middle of the Thames to see the city from a new perspective. 

And I did exactly that by taking a stroll down to Bankside Pier where a Thames Rockets speed boat picked me up and blasted down the river and past all of London's famous sights. 

At speeds of up to 30 knots, you'll whip through a 50-minute circuit including Big Ben and London Tower Bridge.

Quick witted guides will make you second guess whether you're on a RIB tour or at a standup show. But they're not just there to provide laughs, the guides are packed full of knowledge that will have you second guessing how well you really know London's history.  

The tour is packed with enough adrenaline to excite a London local and captures enough of the city that a foreigner will feel like they've seen it all.

By drive 

There's no reason to turn your nose up at a hop-on hop-off bus but the double-decker buses at Bustronome are a cut above the rest. 

The concept is simple but genius – Bustronome converts the top deck of the bus into a very swish fine dining restaurant. Take a seat and devour a gourmet meal while taking in panoramic views of London through a glass rooftop.  

I enjoyed a delectable four-course lunch of lobster girasole, fried salmon, stuffed chicken and a lager profiterole with wine pairings but there are many menus available of up to six courses. 

You might be thinking sudden stops, traffic lights and roundabouts could make the dining experience a little bumpy, but Bustronome has thought of everything, providing special holders for all your cutlery and crockery so that as few spills as possible are made.  

During the 90-minute joy ride, you'll pass big name London icons like Harrods, Trafalgar Square and Buckingham palace.
