A holiday to Fiji is a good idea for so many reasons, from sun, sand, and family-friendly resorts, to an almost unmatched hospitality.

Realistically, Fiji is great at any time of year. But if you’re planning for a specific kind of holiday here is the best time to visit.

Which month is the best time to visit Fiji?

There really are no best or worst months to visit Fiji, but there are changes in weather, crowds and cost that might impact your decision of when to go.

“The beauty of Fiji is that it’s a year-round destination with warm temperatures and welcoming hospitality, perfect for Australians seeking a sun soaked, tropical escape,” Tourism Fiji shared.

There are two seasons: a dry season (May to October) and a wet season (November to April). The wet season is hot and sticky with torrential, but often brief, downpours, with January through March being the wettest period.

July and August typically offer the best weather, with average temperatures at 26 degrees and minimal rain.

“If I had to pick one month for Australians to visit Fiji, I’d say July,” Fiji Airways MD CEO, Paul Scurrah, told nine.com.au.

“It’s right in the middle of Fiji’s dry season, with sunny days, cooler temperatures, and lower humidity, making it ideal for everything from beach holidays to exploring the outer islands,” he said.

As it’s peak season you can expect bigger crowds and higher accommodation prices during these months as they also coincide with the winter school holiday period in Australia and New Zealand.

“June and July are understandably a popular time to travel because visitors can enjoy some of Fiji’s best weather while escaping the Australian winter,” Paul said.

For good weather and smallish crowds, Intrepid Travel suggests April and May as great options, with the rainy season coming to an end.

What month is cyclone season in Fiji?

Hot, humid weather in January and February creates ideal conditions for tropical cyclones, which may result in heavy rainfall, gale-force winds, storm surges and flooding.

Fiji has a great weather warning system in place and there are plenty of local alerts to stay safe.

Outside of that, the rainy season isn’t a bad time to visit. It might be wet but as Intrepid said, “this makes the waterfalls even more spectacular”.

Best time to visit Fiji from Australia

If you’re travelling as a family from Australia, the best time to visit Fiji with kids is probably going to be the dry season.

It has optimal weather for families – lots of sunshine, lower humidity, and minimal rain – making it perfect for beach days, swimming, and exploring.

The best time to visit Fiji for snorkelling is also during the dry season – ideally between June and October.

The wet season rain can reduce water visibility and make it harder to see all the colourful underwater worlds have to offer.

For travellers looking to save on airfares, Paul said the most affordable periods are typically during the shoulder seasons.

“Particularly, February through March and again in October and November, when demand is generally lower than during peak holiday periods,” he said.

“Those months can offer excellent value, with fewer crowds and a great balance of warm tropical weather and competitive fares.”

Booking ahead is one of the best ways to secure the lowest prices, he said.

How many days in Fiji is enough?

Fiji is easily accessible with direct flights from Sydney on carriers like Fiji Airways and Qantas.

It typically takes around four hours on a direct flight to Nadi from Australia, making it an ideal destination for Aussies planning a long weekend, school holiday getaway or extended island escape, according to Tourism Fiji.

As for how long you need to spend there that largely depends on your travel style and how much exploring you want to do.

To truly embrace Fiji’s relaxed pace and experience more than one side of the destination, Tourism Fiji said five to seven days is the ideal length of stay.

“It offers the perfect balance of time to slow down, connect with the destination and experience the true spirit of Fiji.”

If you wish to stay on the main island of Viti Levu, base yourself along the Coral Coast or in Port Denarau to enjoy some resort life, relaxing, plus do a day trip or two.

Tourism Fiji said a week gives visitors the opportunity to immerse themselves in local culture and spend time on the water.

However, if you want to do some island-hopping you’re probably going to want to spend longer there. This gives you enough time to venture further out for stays on the Mamanuca Islands or Yasawa Islands.

For travellers short on time, Tourism Fiji said even a three- or four-night stay can provide a refreshing tropical escape.
