Australians warned as massive tropical storm approaches tourist hotspot

Australian tourists heading to Hawaii are being urged to exercise caution as Hurricane Lowell brings severe weather to the US state.

The federal government’s Smartraveller agency has warned the tropical system could disrupt transport networks and essential services across the island, and is advising travellers to monitor local media and follow emergency directions.

“Hurricane Lowell is expected to impact the Hawaiian Islands, particularly Kauai, bringing heavy rain, flash flooding, strong winds, and storm surges.”

The alert follows Hawaii’s emergency declaration on Monday as authorities prepare for life-threatening conditions.

Although Lowell has been downgraded to a category 3 storm, experts have stressed it continues to pose significant threats to the state’s western islands.

According to the Weather Channel, hurricane warnings remain active for Kauai and Ni’ihau.

“A tropical storm warning is in place for Oahu as the storm will bring storm surge, high winds and flooding rainfall,” the US-based outlet said.

It warned waves of up to 4.2 metres are expected across the island, with surf and rip currents dangerous statewide.

The hurricane is set to move west of the main Hawaiian Islands, including Kauai and Ni’ihau late Tuesday evening (AEST).
