Here's why you're probably never getting an upgrade on your flight
It's the ultimate dream of most airline passengers. A free upgrade from economy to the heady heights of business class at the front of the plane.
Or even better, first class.
There's always a new angle on how to get one. Turn up early, turn up late, dress nicely, travel solo, give chocolates to the crew...the list goes on.
But we wanted to find out once and for all. How likely is it really?

Sadly, Melbourne-based Emirates Regional Sales Manager, Dean Cleaver, said that a glittering free upgrade is out of reach for most.
How to get a free upgrade on a flight?
He did advise there are a couple of ways to improve your chances. But basically, he revealed to 9Travel don't hold your breath.
"Being a frequent flier helps, and the fare you pay helps," he tells us.
"It used to be random years ago, it's not anymore. We are selective to try and reward loyal customers and/or those that have paid a higher fare."
Meanwhile, premium economy has become a popular option for those who don't want to be crammed in economy, but don't want to (or aren't able to) stump up thousands for business class.

Dean says it's become surprisingly popular with couples without children who want to "splash out".
Older couples who don't quite want to pay for business are also packing out that cabin.
Meanwhile, if that's still out of your budget, Dean says it's worth paying the couple of hundred extra for extra leg rooms seats in economy for a comfier journey.
Plus, if you have to option to fly on one of the double decker A380s used by airlines such as Emirates you'll definitely feel like you have more room.
"A380s the walls are almost vertical so there seems to be a sense of more space - it's purely because of the walls," Dean explains.

As for when to book your flights for the best price, as soon as you can is his advice.
"Book as early as you can," Dean says. "The closer you get to departure the more they go up.
"Just short of a year (ahead) you can book."
It comes after Emirates upset some travellers last month when it banned kids from first class on certain bookings.
Upgrades using frequent flier points will no longer be redeemable for passengers under the age of eight.
