The 'vital' thing to do before getting on a cruise ship, according to Catriona Rowntree
Stepping onto a cruise ship for the first time is exciting. But it can also be hugely daunting if you've never been on one before
Getaway's Catriona Rowntree is an avid cruiser, and has been on many different kind of cruises and cruise ships.
So she has plenty of advice to ease any confusion if you are new to cruising.

Speaking to 9Travel, Catriona says her first ever cruise was on the ship which was the "world's biggest" at the time.
She went on a "fantastic" trip around the exotic Bahamas and Caribbean from Miami in Florida, USA.

But she says one vital thing to do is double check what you are allowed to bring on board before you get on.
Flammable things like candles are a strict no, and you should double check with the cruise line about items like heated rollers.

When it comes to getting on board, or embarking as it's known, make sure you have your passport and credit card handy to check in, she says.
Also bring a small amount of cash, but you won't need much as most things go through your on board account.
Make sure you check out the drinks package too. It's something Catriona always signs up for.
"I'm all for all inclusive," she says. "If you can make it as easy and streamlined for me, why not."

Catriona is keen to point out that for those who love to workout it is also possible to do while at sea.
"You can exercise. Cruise ships of all sizes, they do actually have gyms, and you can walk around the ship," she tells 9Travel.
She also leaves black soled shoes at home.
Catriona says they can often leave marks on the pristine timber decks, especially on the ultra luxury ships. She prefers to bring wedges with her instead.
