'Why I found this to be the best city in the world to travel to alone'

Europe has long been an ideal holiday spot for solo travellers.

Everything is relatively close together, many countries use the same currency, and there are plenty of activities to do even if you're on your own.

This is exactly what I did a few years ago, spending nine months ping-ponging across the continent, visiting dozens of cities along the way.

And a few stood out as being excellent cities to explore solo - especially as a woman.

So when Prague was recently named the best city in the world for solo female travellers, I wasn't at all surprised.

Travel gear brand Eminent studied a number of cities around the world to find the ones that offer the safest and most affordable experiences.

What makes Prague so great is its walkable city centre, extensive public transport network, and high safety score.

Though many travellers stay in the old town, I chose to stay a little bit further out of the main tourist area to save money.

Despite being a 20-minute tram ride from the city, and navigating unfamiliar streets at night, I never felt unsafe - something which I can't say for other European cities I went to.

Prague also has so many things to do for travellers, all of which offer chances to meet new people. Because it's a magnet for solo travellers, it's easy to collect friends along the way.

On my first day I did a free walking tour of the city, and a few hours later, I was eating lunch with two travellers that I'd met on the tour, who I ended up seeing repeatedly over my week-long stay.

Even if you're not in the business of making new friends, it's still nice to do these activities where you're surrounded by other solo travellers. Being alone on the road can get lonely sometimes!

Prague locals also have really good English skills with an 800 proficiency score according to the study, so language barriers are rarely a problem when you're there.

Another big win for Prague is the prices. It's a lot cheaper than many other Western European countries. I paid about $30 a night for a hostel dorm, but even nice hotel rooms in the Old Town won't set you back more than $100 a night.

A meal in a nice restaurant will be about $10, or you can pick up street for just a couple of dollars. When you don't have a friend to split accommodation costs with, it's good to be able to save money elsewhere!

It also has a really cool cafe and bar culture. Oustide of the chain coffee shops and touristy bars in the main city, there are some really great local-loved gems to uncover.
