For many people, travelling these days isn't just about ticking destinations off a list, it's about taking time to truly recharge.

Places like Bali, Thailand, Mexico, Philippines, Italy, and Switzerland are touted as having some of the best wellness retreats in the world, and travellers often flock to these destinations with relaxation in mind.

But, according to the latest Well Traveller x Global Wellness Institute 2025 Survey, Australia has been named as the world's most desirable wellness tourism destination.

Australia took the crown, followed closely by New Zealand, Bali, Japan and the South Pacific.

With over 52 per cent of travellers planning a wellness break in the next year, and actively seeking nature-based experiences to recharge, it's becoming a key driver in how Aussies plan their holidays.

Indeed, wellness tourism has seen a huge surge in search interest in the last few years, in part thanks to a post-COVID mindset shift toward prioritising our health.

The numbers don't lie: the global wellness tourism industry is predicted to be worth around $1.35 trillion in 2028. That's more than double what it was just two years ago.

If you needed further proof that Australia is really shining in this space right now, just last week, Elements of Byron was crowned Best Hotel or Resort Focused on Wellness at the prestigious 2025 Spa & Wellness Awards.

The NSW property triumphed over other renowned luxury destinations such as Qualia on Hamilton Island, and Kokomo Private Island, Fiji, to take out the top honour.

Elements of Byron General Manager, Michael Skinner, says both Australia in general and Byron Bay as a region, are at the forefront of that trend.

"What we have noticed, and long anticipated, is that wellness is becoming more intuitive. Wellness travel is shifting away from rigid schedules and intensive programs," he tells 9Travel.

"Instead, travellers are seeking environments that naturally support their wellbeing."

He also says nature-first wellness is on the rise.

"There's a growing desire to reconnect with the natural world as a pathway to wellbeing. Guests are gravitating toward experiences like forest bathing, ocean swims, and immersive nature walks," Michael says.

Set on 50 acres of rainforest, eucalypt, wetland and dune ecologies fronting Belongil Beach, Elements of Byron has has that natural element on its side - plus daily yoga classes, self-guided meditation rituals, forest trails and more.

"We've seen an increase in guests drawn to the resort because of its natural setting and opportunities to slow down – whether that's through yoga, nature walks or spa rituals," Michael adds.

Nick Baker, CEO of Reflections Holidays, agrees that Byron Bay remains a timeless wellness hub.

"From sunrise yoga and ocean swims to locally sourced wholefoods, it's a place that encourages travellers to slow down and reconnect," he tells 9Travel.

And it's definitely something that is spreading all around the country.

Nick says the shift towards a slow holiday is evident across Reflections Holidays' locations, where more travellers are choosing tiny homes, beach side cabins and glamping stays that offer a break from the always-on lifestyle.

"A holiday is no longer just about taking time off. It's about using that time to reconnect with nature, recharge mentally and physically, and return home feeling better than when you left," he says.

"The concept of wellness has also changed in recent years. It is no longer just about what you eat and exercise, it now encompasses time away from screens, uninterrupted time in nature and also quality time with loved ones."
