You don't have to be flying business or first class to live it up in an airport lounge

For many travellers they're an off limits heaven hidden behind clouded glass doors, for only the privileged few.

Airline lounges are generally only for those who can afford to fly at the pointy end of the plane - or have an elite airline status.

But it is actually possible to go into some airport lounges and indulge in the food and drinks which come with them, by paying.

They generally have buffet food, a bar, hot drinks, and plenty of comfy chairs. TV's and magazines are usually on offer, as well as charging points and even showers.

They are usually open in line with airport and flight times, meaning you can stay there until departure.

And they mean you can also avoid being slugged with airport prices for food and drinks.

Here's how to get into airport lounges across Australia without flying business or first class.

Sydney Airport lounges you can pay for

There are lounges anyone flying internationally can use at Sydney Airport. One is the Plaza Premier lounge

You can get barista-made coffee included in the entry fee, as well as hot and cold food.

The are also showers, bathrooms and plenty of charging points as well as free wifi.

The starting price for an adult for two hours is $60.10 according to the website, if you book ahead.

Another option is The House.

It has waiter service to bring you the included drinks, plus you can order dishes from around the world. It costs $75 for adults and $44 for children for three hours.

Otherwise you can visit the American Express lounge - if you have a credit card you may be able to use the lounge for free or for a charge.

Melbourne Airport lounges you can pay for

The House by Aspire Lounge will allow you access three hours before your flight. There is a dress code - fancy dress and track suits are not allowed.

It costs $75 for adults and $44 for children for three hours.

For just under $70 (children under two are free) you can also hang out in the Marhaba Lounge for four hours.

There are working areas as well as places to chill, and plenty of food and drinks.

Plaza Premium Lounge, which costs $57 if booked online, is another place you can relax and indulge before your overseas flight from Melbourne.

Melbourne also has an American Express lounge for card holders.

Brisbane Airport lounges you can pay for

If you're not flying business or don't have an elite frequent flier status, you can still enjoy the high life in the Plaza Premium lounge in Brisbane.

There's an à la carte menu, buffet of hot meals, salad bar, and freshly-brewed barista coffee to indulge in. The all-inclusive rate for two hours is $60.

Adelaide Airport lounges you can pay for

Adelaide now has a Plaza Premium Lounge. It has bar snacks as well dishes with a South Aussie flavour, alongside the usual lounge benefits.

A two hour visit is $62.10 for an adult and children aged two to 11 cost as $43,45, according to the website. Children under two are free.

Perth Airport lounges you can pay for

Perth Airport has one lounge you can pay for which is the Perth Airport Aspire Lounge.

If departing through Terminal 1 International you can get away from the crowds in the more private area.

It's $75 for adults and $44 for children if booked in advance, or $82.50 per adult and $44 per child on the door.

It also has a dedicated kids space.
