A huge win for Kyrgios capped off the day, and the path for the Aussie star has now been cleared for a potential fourth-round match-up with world No.1 Daniil Medvedev after several upsets on day one in their quarter of the draw.

Nick Kyrgios says he never wants to play against his close friend Thanasi Kokkinakis again after winning their US Open first-round tie in straight sets.

The pair are long-time friends and doubles partners, and their hearts sank when the draw for the last major of the year was released.

"I thought I played a really good first couple of sets, got on top of the match early. When we both saw the draw it was a nightmare, honestly," Kyrgios said on-court after his victory.

"We never want to play each other, and he probably beats 80 per cent of the draw tonight, he's been playing really good.

"I can't wait to get out there and play doubles with him on the right side of the net. We're going to play each other, hopefully, never again. We're going to close that."

Kyrgios is now set to take on French player Benjamin Bonzi in round two.

"Very solid player, having a great season," the Aussie said of his next opponent.

"I'm not even going to think about that, I'm going to go home, have some food and just chill out."

Nick Kyrgios beats his fellow Aussie and close friend Thanasi Kokkinakis in straight sets 6-3, 6-4, 6-6 (7-4) on Arthur Ashe Stadium.

He progresses to round two where he will take on Benjamin Bonzi, who upset Ugo Humbert earlier.

Kyrgios only broke Kokkinakis twice in the match but it's fair to say he didn't struggle to beat his Special Ks doubles partner.

We're off to a tiebreak in the third set!

Neither player manages to break - Kyrgios is gunning to win it in straight sets, Thanasi Kokkinakis hoping to steal one off him.

Nick Kyrgios has finally shown a bit of fire during his match with close friend Thanasi Kokkinakis.

Just as he did during Wimbledon, Kyrgios took exception with his box failing to stand up and cheer him on during his service game.

"You can't stand up at 0-40?" Kyrgios yelled after winning a game in the third set.

"But his team can do it, and it's legal now - it's legal!"

It's on serve in the third with Kyrgios up two sets to love.

Nick Kyrgios takes the second set 6-4, again only one break against his mate Thanasi Kokkinakis.

The No.23 seed isn't dominating but it's fair to say he is not being troubled too much in this match.

You get the feeling Kyrgios is happy for it to go longer than needed.

It's been a relatively calm match from the firebrand Nick Kyrgios so far, but he did have some words towards his box at the end of the first set.

Before winning set point, he gestured towards his supporters in between serves.

After winning the set he continued speaking as he sat in his chair.

"Nick Kyrgios telling his crew, 'just calm down a little bit, I've got it under control' - indeed he does," Todd Wooodbridge said on Nine's commentary.

Nick Kyrgios has the early break in the second set and leads 2-1 with his service game to come.

Not great signs for Thanasi Kokkinakis.

Nick Kyrgios got the first break to lead 5-3 and then held serve to close out the first set 6-3 over Thanasi Kokkinakis.

He has some words to the chair umpire at the end of the set, not sure what it could be about.
