Swimming Australia asks Meta to delete fake quotes attributed to Kyle Chalmers

Swimming Australia has again taken action after fake comments surfaced on social media attributed to Kyle Chalmers, less than a fortnight after Mollie O'Callaghan was targeted by a scam of the same nature.

Fabricated quotes about the LGBT community and transgender athletes attributed to Chalmers are circulating on Facebook, prompting Swimming Australia (SA) to ask Meta to delete them.

SA made the same request earlier this month after similar quotes attributed to O'Callaghan appeared on the social media platform.

Some of the fake quotes attributed to Chalmers and O'Callaghan are about American transgender swimmer Lia Thomas.

"There are currently fabricated quotes attributed to Dolphin Kyle Chalmers appearing on social media," Swimming Australia said in a statement on Thursday morning.

"Kyle Chalmers has never been interviewed by Swim Hub or Swim Aquatics and additionally has never provided commentary on LGBT or transgender athletes.

"Meta was first advised of the fake news involving Australian swimmers two weeks ago.

"Chalmers and Swimming Australia have again requested the posts to be taken down.

"At this stage, Chalmers and Swimming Australia will not be making further comment."

Fabricated quotes have also been attributed to Australian swimming champions Ariarne Titmus and Kaylee McKeown in recent weeks, as well as Thomas and American swimming legend Michael Phelps.

Facebook is one of the social media platforms run by Meta, of which Mark Zuckerberg is the founder, chairman and CEO.
