Italian 19-year-old skier Matilde Lorenzi dies from her injuries after crash in training

A young Italian skier has been killed in a horror training crash in northern Italy.

Matilde Lorenzi, 19, was trailing on the Schnalstaler glacier in Val Senales crashed heavily on Tuesday (AEDT). She was flown to a hospital in Bolzano in a serious condition.

She died a short time later of severe head injuries.

"We are deeply saddened by the passing of Matilde Lorenzi," the world ski body said.

"Matilde was tragically lost following a fall during a training session on the Grawand G1 slope in Val Senales.

"FISI is in mourning, standing by her family, friends, and everyone who cherished Matilde, honoring her memory today and always."

Vancouver Winter Olympics gold medallist Lindsey Vonn said on Instagram Lorenzi's death was a "tragic loss".

Lorenzi was attached to the Italian army and her death was announced by the national defense ministry.

She competed at the junior world championships last season, placing sixth in downhill and eighth in super-G. She also raced on the second-tier European Cup circuit.
