BRISBANE: Joe Schmidt is the ultimate pragmatist but the Wallabies coach saw enough character in his players on Saturday night to keep hope alive of levelling the series in Melbourne next weekend.

The highly anticipated first Test went largely to script as the heavily favoured British and Irish Lions claimed a deserved 27-19 victory to delight the 'Sea of Red' at a heaving Suncorp Stadium.

It looked like Australia could be on the way to being embarrassed when impressive Lions hooker Dan Sheehan scored two minutes after halftime to give the tourists a dominant 24-5 lead.

Gutted Wallabies captain Harry Wilson reflects on the first Test loss.

"It's obviously disappointing," Wilson tells Stan Sport.

"We came in wanting to win, and I feel as if we probably didn't really get our game going there. But the Lions were good and credit to them.

"They won a few big moments. Nothing changes. To win the series, you have to win two games and so we're going to go and do our best next week."

Lions flanker Tadgh Beirne is named man of the match after leading the defensive effort with 23 tackles.

"Very proud... but I think Australia will be going into next week with a lot of confidence. Our goal is to win every match here," Beirne says.

The big Irishman was not considered a surefire selection for the Test team but he has repaid coach Andy Farrell's faith.

The Lions are now 6-0 in Australia after losing to Argentina in Dublin.
