Tough luck for the Wallabies as a slow start comes back to haunt them, while the All Blacks did enough to hold on and retain the trophy.

New Zealand 31 (Will Jordan, Rieko Ioane, Caleb Clarke, Ardie Savea tries; Damian McKenzie 4 conversions, penalty) Australia 28 (Fraser McReight, Matt Faessler, Hunter Paisami, Tom Wright tries; Noah Lolesio 4 conversions). HT: 28-14

FULLTIME: All Blacks 31, Wallabies 28

The All Blacks have held on to beat the Wallabies 31-28 in the opening Bledisloe Cup Test.

Ardie Savea and TJ Perenara combined for a big defensive play to hold Hunter Paisami up and win a scrum feed before Savea booted the ball into touch to secure the win.

It means the All Blacks have retained the Bledisloe ahead of the return match in Wellington next Saturday.

Plenty to unpack from that crazy game.

And now the All Blacks are reduced to 13 men as winger Caleb Clarke is yellow carded for a deliberate knock on!

They lead 31-21 after 72 minutes.

Paisami gives Wallabies life

Sam Worthington

Well, well, well - could there be a massive plot twist?

Hunter Paisami has scored after a memorable Lukhan Salakaia-Loto bust to cut the All Blacks lead to 31-21 after 66 minutes.

All Blacks centre Anton Lienert-Brown has also been sinbinned.

Drama.

Ratima denied special All Blacks try

Cortez Ratima thought he had scored one of the great long range All Blacks tries but the halfback is denied as replays showed Damian McKenzie's pass was fractionally forward.

The All Blacks have left plenty of points out there this afternoon.

They still lead comfortably, 31-14 after 56 minutes.

"That's some sort of try from the All Blacks - a highlight reel special," Tim Horan says on Stan Sport before it's disallowed.

Another bullet dodged for Australia, who have missed 28 tackles to New Zealand's 10.

Slipper breaks Gregan's record

Wallabies prop James Slipper is on for Angus Bell and becomes the most capped Australian rugby player ever.

He has broken George Gregan's record of 139 Tests.

"A really special moment for James Slipper," Tim Horan says on Stan Sport.

The crowd here is 68,061 and the All Blacks lead 31-14 after 52 minutes.

The Wallabies need to win or draw to keep their Bledisloe Cup hopes alive.

McKenzie opens second half scoring

Damian McKenzie opens the second half scoring with a simple penalty and the All Blacks lead 31-14 after 44 minutes.

HALFTIME: All Blacks 28, Wallabies 14

Sam Worthington

A little bit of respite for the Wallabies before halftime as Jordie Barrett's try is scrubbed out for a knock on in the build up.

"I understood the ruling but from that angle I'm not sure that I would agree," Andrew Mehrtens says on Stan Sport.

"The Wallabies got away with one there," Tim Horan adds.

"Joe Schmidt would pick that up and show his team, they are too narrow defensively.

"You cannot allow Will Jordan, Damian McKenzie any one-on-one space against the defensive line."
