Australian swimming legend Cate Campbell has revealed the introduction of the full fleet of 50m events for Los Angeles 2028 could entice her back into the pool.

One-lap dashes in butterfly, back- and breaststroke will be added to the swimming program 40 years after the 50m freestyle was made an Olympic event for Seoul 1988.

The announcement has already prompted Brit Adam Peaty to confirm he will aim to make the team in LA, as will South African veteran Roland Schoeman who will turn 48 a fortnight before the opening ceremony.

When asked if she, too, would aim to be at LA, Campbell admitted the announcement had prompted her to "sit down and do the maths", but otherwise dodged the question.

"Between that and the announcement of the Brisbane Olympic venues, I was like 'how long can I stretch this?'," she said on Nine's Wide World of Sports.

"I think it will keep people in the sport longer. I enjoy butterfly, but not two laps of butterfly. One lap of butterfly is more than enough.

"It's tough, but it's also fun. It adds a little bit of novelty to swimming. It's such a boring sport to train for."

When pushed further on her non-answer and what the maths told her, she admitted the door was open, but perhaps only slightly ajar.

"Look, it's probably a no right now," she said.

"(But) Roland Schoeman will be 48 and he has said that he's going to come back. So maybe if he can do it, why can't I?

"I'm not going to shut the door."

The new swimming medals are among 22 additional gold medals that will be up for grabs in LA. Others are in mixed-gender team events in athletics, golf, artistic gymnastics, archery, coastal rowing and table tennis.
