Australian BMX star Logan Martin has personal items stolen in break-in just days out from Paris 2024

PARIS: Australian BMX star Logan Martin has had personal items stolen from a van by thieves, just days out from competing at Paris 2024.

In a series of videos posted to Instagram, Martin described the "crazy start to the trip" as a black van was shown with the windows smashed in on a street in Brussels, Belgium.

Martin, 30, said his bikes were safe but bags with personal items had been taken from the van.

"Our van got broken into overnight," the Tokyo 2020 gold medallist wrote.

"Luckily most of our stuff was in our room and we managed to recover a lot of it too.

"I lost my wallet, backpack and a few other things but overall it didn't end up being too bad.

"It's unfortunate when people feel the need to do things like this."

Another video from the post showed Martin and his team finding more gear - including a massage table - that appeared to have been dumped behind a park bench.

"Thank God for bag tags - we found our bags," Martin said.

The Australian team's chef de mission Anna Meares said Martin's team was working to replace his helmets and boots but expressed relief his bikes were not taken so close to his event.

"It was unfortunate that the car was broken into. What we do know is that Logan's bikes are ok," she said.

"As you can appreciate, having sporting equipment, you potentially lose it this close to a competition can be quite stressful, (but) his bikes are fine."

It's the latest in a series of security scares in the lead-up to the Games, with two staffers from Nine - the publisher of this website - attacked while walking to their hotel in a suspected attempted robbery on Monday.

Paris police are also investigating allegations an Australian woman was gang-raped by up to five men in the tourist hotspot of Montmartre on the weekend.

Meares has urged athletes not to wear their uniforms in public outside of competition and to travel in numbers.

"We're in one of the biggest cities in the world, and crime is, unfortunately not void in city life and life in general - doesn't matter what city you're in," she said on Wednesday.

"And so we're just encouraging people to have their wits about them, (use) common sense."

Asked whether she was concerned for athletes' safety, Meares said the team would rely on the security advice and instead focus on competition.

"Having been around Paris at the moment, there's so much security, so many police officers, military and I think that's reassuring, the presence is there," she said.

Martin will defend his Tokyo 2020 gold medal - the first in the event's history - on July 30 and 31 at the Place de la Concorde in Paris.

The Australian Olympic Committee has been contacted for comment.
