Paris campaign of Aussie Olympic decathlon medallist Ash Moloney dashed by injury

Australian Olympic bronze medallist Ash Moloney has pulled out of the men's decathlon in Paris due to injury.

The Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) said on Friday morning (AEST) that Moloney, who won bronze at Tokyo 2020, had withdrawn because of a suspected adductor issue.

The 24-year-old contested the 100m, long jump and shot put on the first day of Stade de France athletics competition, but succumbed to injury before the high jump and 400m later in the day.

Australian Olympic pole vault gold medallist Steve Hooker backed Moloney's decision to withdraw.

"After his first attempt in the long jump it looked like he was proppy getting out of the pit, and then he didn't register another jump," Hooker said on Nine's Olympic coverage.

"His body language in the shot put was really poor, so there was a sense that something was going on, and we weren't sure if he'd proceed.

"It's a true test of physical endurance," Hooker said of the decathlon, "and to get through all 10 events is enormous and he obviously wasn't right. It's the right thing for his long term to pull out."

Moloney's withdrawal leaves Daniel Golubovic as Australia's only competitor in the men's decathlete.
