'It's wasted on you!': Aussie volleyballer's confession has Ally Langdon throw hands up in despair

There's one advantage Australian athletes have up their sleeves that nobody else in the Olympic Village – and on the streets of Paris – can even dream of getting their hot little hands on.

Yes, we're talking about the coffee.

In addition to the 200 chefs hired to help prepare the estimated 40,000 meals that will have been served to more than 15,000 athletes from across the globe by the time Paris 2024 ends on August 11, the AOC flew over three baristas to make sure Team Australia's flat whites were up to scratch – and that's something Nine's Allison Langdon wishes she had for herself.

The revelation came when Langdon and James Bracey were speaking with Australia's Taliqua Clancy and Mariafe Artacho del Solar ahead of their women's beach volleyball quarter-final.

At the end of their discussion, Bracey asked the duo about life in the Olympic Village, and what their favourite part of it has been.

"A few pin swaps is always great," Clancy replied. "I'm always on the hunt for pin swapping."

"It is really nice now, all the teams and everyone is rolling in and out and it is such a good vibe in the Aussie hub," Clancy continued. "Everyone just gets around each other so it is just so good."

To that, Langdon, who was in Nine's studio in Paris, replied: "We are just so jealous you are getting that awesome Aussie coffee that we are just not getting here. I'm not whinging, you know..."

But it was at this moment that Clancy twisted the knife, confirming that not only did she have access to the very thing Langdon was coveting, but she didn't even want it.

"We don't drink coffee, so, but we love that for everyone else," Clancy said with a smile.

Langdon, throwing her hands up in the air with a grin on her face, jokingly begrudged: "Ah, it's wasted on you!"

The AOC first revealed their specialised team of three baristas in early June, with chef de mission Anna Meares saying at the time: "You cannot underestimate how much that will impact the morale of athletes, having spent weeks if not months from home already away."

The tradition first began in Tokyo, when a local coffee cart was hired by the AOC and the barista was coincidentally Victoria-born and Fitzroy-trained. He ended up making an estimated 600 coffees a day, assisted sometimes by Tokyo 2020 chef de mission Susie O'Neill.

One year later, at Beijing 2022, Brisbane barista Jacob King was imported for the Winter Olympics – and he was so cherished that he dressed in Australia's team uniform and marched in the opening ceremony.
