Joey predicts that Brisbane Broncos won't make the NRL's top eight this season
It might have been a tough week for tipsters but not as far as Gus was concerned after he surged into a share of the lead after almost tipping the card.
Gus has been joined at the top of the table on 21 by Freddy and Joey, while the early season leader Locky has fallen off top spot by one. With only five tips separating our experts and the NRL only five rounds old, it’s still anybody’s competition.
Round 6 action kicks off when the Sydney Roosters host the South Sydney Rabbitohs, live and free on Nine on Thursday night at 7.30pm, and Joey said he was leaning towards the home team before admitting to one concern.
“The worrying thing for the Roosters last week when they beat the Sharks by 18 points or something is that four of those tries were from kicks,” Johns said.
“Their attack still hasn’t clicked and if you look at Souths they came home really strongly, they were coming to get the Dragons.
“I’ll lean towards the Roosters but this will be a really tight game, a really tough game and I’m looking forward to this one.”
Joey said he held even bigger concerns for the Brisbane Broncos, who will face the in-form Warriors at Mt Smart Stadium on Saturday.
The Broncos have managed only two wins this season with coach Wayne Bennett admitting they are struggling for confidence.
“The Warriors will win, they’re the certainties of the weekend, they’re flying at the moment, the Warriors,” Joey said.
“Last week, double header, 25,000 people over there at Mt Smart, there will be a huge crowd there again.
“Big snowball of confidence going on in New Zealand at the moment and the Broncos, they won’t make the eight this year. They are in a bit of trouble.
“There’s talk that (Kodi) Nikorima is out, Jack Bird is going to play five-eighth. Looking at Jack Bird he looks really underdone, he looks like he’s carrying some kilos.
“They’re struggling for combinations and creativity, and the combination of Jack Bird and (Anthony) Milford in the halves I don’t know how they’ll go.
“Darius Boyd, he just doesn’t even look like he’s firing. I’ve heard him even talk about retirement. When a player starts talking about retirement, that’s where it’s a worry.”
