Madge quizzed as mystery surrounds Reynolds’ coaching role

Brisbane is keeping a cloak of secrecy over details of the post-playing role Adam Reynolds will take up at Red Hill, despite the openness of the champion halfback.

Reynolds said in a radio interview on Triple M last week that his role at the Broncos would involve coaching the halves and kickers and working with the academy.

But head coach Michael Maguire was guarded when asked during his captain’s run press conference on Wednesday about the position awaiting Reynolds, whose decorated career came to a turbulent close last week.

“We’re working through what his role will be. He’ll be around the club, for sure. Where that’s gonna land, we’re still working our way through that,” Maguire said.

“It’d be crazy not to utilise Reyno when I’ve known him for about 14 years.

“Look, he’s gonna be a big part [of the Broncos] and he always will be. The legacy that he’s been able to leave here is pretty special.”

Given the confusion around the role being formalised for Reynolds, Maguire was asked to clarify if the retiring captain would be taking on a coaching position.

“He’s gonna have many roles here,” Maguire replied.

Nine.com.au tried seeking clarity through the club’s football department on the role being finalised for Reynolds, but details were not forthcoming.

Meanwhile, Maguire launched a passionate defence of Brisbane five-eighth Ezra Mam in Wednesday’s press conference.

The enigmatic No.6 has kept his spot in the team for Brisbane’s final game of the season – a clash with Canterbury at Accor Stadium on Thursday night – despite his woeful defence last week against Melbourne at Suncorp Stadium, where he missed seven tackles.

Mam has missed 96 tackles this season – the most of any player in the NRL.

“Every great player has had their challenges at times,” Maguire said.

“We go through many of them, with players here and players at other clubs.

“Knowing what Ez is capable of and how hard he’s working in the background, if you stay persistent at that, well, he’ll find his best game.

“He’s one hell of a player, Ez. He’s gone through a bit of a challenge, which is part of a career. It takes a team to make sure we help him out.”
