Connor Watson's Origin axing confirmed after arriving for PNG Chiefs visit

Connor Watson looks set to sign with PNG Chiefs for their inaugural 2028 season in another major recruitment coup for the competition's 19th team.

But his trip to Port Moresby to visit the expansion club's officials also confirmed that the incumbent NSW Blues utility was set to miss out on selection.

With the squad set to meet on Monday to begin camp for the State of Origin series opener, Watson touched down in PNG on Sunday for a tour of the region and facilities.

Nine's Zac Bailey posted photos via social media of Watson with his partner.

Watson has played five matches for the Blues over the past two years, but looks destined to be overlooked for game one by coach Laurie Daley.

It's expected that Ethan Strange and Blayke Brailey will debut on the six-man bench.

Upon his arrival, Watson attended a Queensland Cup game featuring the PNG Hunters, shaking hands and taking photos with the locals.

The 29-year-old spoke to local media outlet Post Courier after landing at the airport and explained his potential move to join the Chiefs was about more than money.

"I'm fortunate enough to come over here and show Kiana around to make sure it's the right fit for both of us," Watson explained.

"Obviously the money helps start the conversations, but to come over here and see the impact you can have on a country, I think that goes a long way as well.

"You can't just come here for money, you're not gonna enjoy the experience.

"It's gotta be a holistic thing … we want to come to a place where we can make change."

Watson was granted permission by the Roosters to negotiate with rival clubs for next season and is tipped to join the Dragons on a one-year deal before moving to PNG.
