'Just wait and see': Ex-Broncos coach Kevin Walters set to land Kangaroos' top job

The hunt for Mal Meninga's successor has reportedly come to an end with former Broncos coach Kevin Walters set be appointed head coach of the Kangaroos.

Speculation has been rife over who will land the top job for the national team after Meninga was unveiled as the inaugural head coach of the Perth Bears.

The likes of Brad Fittler and Cameron Smith were among the leading contenders to step into the role but the ARL Commission have opted in favour of Walters.

According to The Sydney Morning Herald, Smith is in line for the assistant coach role under Walters.

The ARL Commission is set to meet this week to finalise the deal, which will see Walters take charge of the team for the Ashes tour.

However, it is understood Walters will be on a three-Test deal.

If the Ashes tour is successful, it is likely Walters would be in strong contention to retain the role on a longer deal.

Although, he would be unable to take on any coaching opportunities that arise at club level.

"I can't tell you anything, there'll be a decision made tomorrow," Walters replied when asked about his rumoured appointment on Fox League on Sunday.

"We'll just wait and see. Obviously I'd be very privileged and grateful to get the opportunity to coach Australia.

"It's a privilege to put the green and gold on and to coach the side, even more so. We'll just see what happens tomorrow."
