Dragons forward Jaydn Su'A placed on report for hip-drop despite Kevin Walters' 'not a lot to it' verdict

Dragons forward Jaydn Su'A will await the match review committee's judiciary report after he was punished for a hip-drop tackle on Joseph Tapine in his side's 28-24 loss.

The Raiders prop left the field in the 25th minute after he was taken down by Su'A.

On this occasion, Tapine was caught between the legs of Su'A — unlike in a usual hip-drop tackle where the defender drops their weight on the legs of the ball-runner.

For that reason, Kevin Walters said there was "not a lot to it" on Fox League.

When Damien Cook argued Su'A's case, referee Gerard Sutton agreed there wasn't a lot of intent.

"But it's dangerous contact," he added.

The Dragons were hurt early when Tyrell Sloan looked to have scored in the corner, however it was ruled a forward pass from Moses Suli.

"I thought it was OK, a big call," Cooper Cronk said.

The Raiders were first to score at GIO Stadium when Xavier Savage dived sideways into the corner.

St George Illawarra eventually hit back through Sloan off a slick backline play.

The final try of the first half went to Kaeo Weekes, who picked up a loose ball 90 metres from the try line and ran the distance. He then bowed to the crowd to put his touch on Try July.

Weekes has his own drama from the match, though, after he was put on report for a crusher tackle on Blake Lawrie.

A bloodbath looked like it was on the horizon when Weekes scored his second after the break, while Morgan Smithies also crossed for his first try to make it 24-6.

The Dragons were back in the hunt when Su'A crossed before Weekes had a hat-trick in the 61st minute.

Sloan scored his second to make matters interesting, and it was only a four-point difference when Kyle Flanagan went over in the 72nd minute.

However, the Dragons couldn't find the killer blow, and it was more chaos when David Klemmer was sin-binned before full time for a high shot.
