'Unsustainable': RLPA calls for reduction of games during NRL season

Kalyn Ponga's initial withdrawal from the Kangaroos squad ahead of the Pacfiic Championship shone a light on player welfare in the NRL, with the player's union calling for less games throughout the season.

There are currently 27 rounds in an NRL season, with each club playing 24 matches. But RLPA CEO Clint Newton has called for a reduction in games, saying the current model is "unsustainable".

The NRL season begins in February with trials and the Las Vegas venture begins only weeks later. Players play through until September, with rep stars continuing on for another month, only for preseason to start in November for other players.

Speaking to SEN Radio, Newton revealed a 22 round season is a the aim.

"We know statistically from our players that they believe a reduction in the number of matches they're asked to play will produce better results for them," he said.

"Ultimately that produces a better quality for the fans, broadcasters and major partners," Newton noted, citing longer careers, fewer injuries and improved player performance.

A reduction in games has been proposed to ARLC chairman Peter V'Landys, who has spoken about the possibility of reducing the length of the season once the NRL expands to 20 teams.

That should happen by 2028.

It's understood increasing the number of teams in the competition by three would could see a 19 round season, with a potential mid-season break for State of Origin.
