'I did speak to Wayne': Bennett's assessment of Lachlan Ilias convinced him to leave Souths

A simple conversation with Wayne Bennett was all Lachlan Ilias needed to confirm the reality of his future with the Rabbitohs.
Ilias' spot in the starting line at South Sydney was placed under a cloud due in late 2024 following the signing of Lewis Dodd.
The three-time Super League champion outweighed any chance of Ilias earning the spot as Bennett's number one pick at halfback, prompting him to take up an opportunity with the Dragons.

"I did speak to Wayne quite a bit. He saw me as a half, utility, hooker kind of (player)," Ilias said.
"I sent him a message saying I was going to sign (with the Dragons) and he said he was really happy for me."

The 24-year-old revealed his hunt for a new team was in pursuit of ensuring his role as a starting halfback in the game, with the Dragons the right team to continue his career.
"I'm just excited to be a seven," he said.
"That's where I've wanted to play and where I believe I'm at best."
In his time with the Rabbitohs, Ilias faced several setbacks including being dropped from the team following the second round by then coach Jason Demetriou.
The halfback later suffered a fracture to his right leg while competing in the NSW Cup, which saw him sidelined and required to undergo surgery.

Overcoming the battle, his fresh start with the Dragons will not only come with individual benefits but also assist with the introduction of other newcomers.
"Last year, he was probably a bit hard done by and followed by injury as well," Damien Cook said of Ilias' 2024 season.
"He's going to be fresh and firing coming into this season. He's got plenty of footy in front of him, and his best is yet to come in attack.
"I'm looking forward to him showing everyone that as well.
"New challenge, new teammates, a new set of eyes on me (also).
"Last season was quite mentally draining. A fresh start has come at a good time."
