'Not gonna touch on that': Michael Maguire denies talks of sacking Ezra Mam amid Broncos culture concerns

Michael Maguire has spoken publicly for the first time since Ezra Mam's off-field incident, shutting down suggestions the Broncos will sack the embattled five-eighth.

The 22-year-old was involved in a motor vehicle accident last week before testing positive to a roadside drug test, while police have also alleged he was driving without a licence.

Mam has since admitted himself to a rehab facility to deal with off-field issues in a bid to save his career in the NRL.

Speaking to media in Brisbane, the incoming head coach was quizzed about whether the club would terminate Mam's contract and revealed the pair had spoken since the incident.

"I'm not even gonna touch on that at the moment," Maguire said.

"I've got to go through everything and look at where and how he got to that point. It's never nice obviously when you have to go through things like this.

"I'll keep the conversations I've had with Ezra [private] - I've got to find out more about what the situation entails. I have spoken to him and it's more about the safety involved.

"He's got to go through a process - with the police, with the game and with the organisation itself. At the end of the day, wherever that's gonna land, we're gonna move forward.

"It could take quite some time to get to where we want to be. I'm across it, but I like to talk to people first because I really make those decisions. We are talking about humans here … I want to have a complete understanding before I make any further comment around the situation.

"I've been in the game for a long time and seen many players go through different situations and you learn a lot of lessons. I'm not downgrading the situation, it's one that we need to have a look at … but people will make mistakes but they've also got to own them."

"If he owns where he's at - his actions moving forward are very important and I know he's getting some help at the moment. When he works through that, I'll get some time with him."

Maguire landed back in Brisbane to deal with the situation on Wednesday morning and will hold talks with club officials in the coming days regarding the star playmaker, while also admitting he "empathised a lot" with the victims of the crash.

The premiership winner also addressed the widespread culture concerns at Red Hill and claims he will take the necessary steps to help the Broncos return to the promised land.

"Every club has different situations going on inside," Maguire said.

"I'll assess that as I go, but it's very well documented that things have been going on and I'll address them as I see them. 

"Until I actually get inside and start talking to players … I'll start to make my own mind up about what we need to do moving forward.

"Obviously it's well documented that there are things that need to be adjusted."
