An up and coming hooker likened to the game's greatest, Cameron Smith, is turning heads in Brisbane - but there is one man who is keen to delay the fairytale.

Many good judges reckon Blake Mozer is going to take the NRL by storm, and he already earned a debut at the end of last season when coach Kevin Walters opted to rest his big guns before the finals.

The 19-year-old Keebra Park graduate has already been training with Brisbane's NRL squad for two years, and will on Saturday night wear the No.9 jumper in the Broncos' first pre-season trial, against Wynnum Manly.

And while fans are salivating at the thought of the teenager bursting into first grade, it's the NRL coach's son who currently stands in Mozer's way.

Billy Walters, 30, enjoyed his best season last year when he took control of the hooker position and helped his team to the grand final.

His father will face an awkward selection conundrum at some point this year when it comes time to choose between the two.

But for now, Billy is confident he's still the first choice.

"I'm not sure what conversations he's had with Blake, for me it's been (that) the position is mine to lose at the moment," Walters told Wide World of Sports.

"I'm definitely not set in stone there, if I have a few bad games there are going to be a few boys chomping at my heels trying to get in.

"(Dad) was pretty clear when we came back that I'd be the starting nine if I was fit and training well.

"I'm in a position now where it's mine to lose, so if I start slipping up there are going to be boys there to take my spot.

"It's a pretty good spot to be in, I've worked pretty hard to be here, so I don't want to give it away too easy."

While Walters won't feature in a weakened Broncos team on Saturday night, he plans to play the first official pre-season trial against the Cowboys the following week.

He will then jump on a plane to Las Vegas with the rest of the squad, preparing for their round one clash with the Roosters in America.
